Fast 9 Review

WARNING: THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN FAST 9 YET.

Damon and his girlfriend have watched every single Fast and Furious movie over the course of the last 18 months. They probably could've done something better with their time like take online classes or invest in stocks or real estate. Oh, well. Anyway, here's Damon's review of Fast 9.

Social Media is Ruining Wrestling, 6-9-95 Part 2

Social media is ruining wrestling

I hate to be the old man shaking his fist at the cloud but it ruins the immersion of the product. Of course, this is and has been entirely my doing for 20 years because I would constantly seek out behind-the-scenes information on message boards and follow wrestlers on their social media accounts dating back to Alex Shelley's LiveJournal. I think the deeper issue is that I want wrestling to feel real again and it hasn't felt that way in a while.

6-9-95 Part 2

I also realized that we don't really talk about the Kawada/Taue vs. Misawa/Kobashi match as much as we did previously. We did, however, discuss how those Four Pillars of All Japan Pro Wrestling shaped how we view wrestling. Their body of work and the work they put into the craft of professional wrestling is something you can commend whether you're a puro fan or not.

Juneteenth; 6-9-1995 Part 1

I opened this episode with a brief monologue (if you want to call it that) regarding the importance of Juneteenth in the United States. I would be remiss in not acknowledging the significance of this day to me as a Black man and to other Black people in the United States.

If you're not familiar with this day, here's a brief overview from Wikipedia.

Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and historically known as Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Emancipation Day) is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the end of slavery, and is regularly observed with celebrations of African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1866.

The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

To learn more about Juneteenth, please visit Juneteenth.com.

FYI, the opening quote in the intro of this episode were stolen from our Juneteenth newsletter at my shoot job. I wish I were that eloquent.

6-9-1995

We took a break last week, but we still wanted to discuss a match that makes the case for being the greatest tag team match of all time. Hell, it makes a case for being one of the greatest matches ever, regardless of match type or stipulation.

A match that is so significant in professional wrestling that it's simply known by the date in which it occurred. That match is the Super Generation Army of Mitsuharu Misawa and Kenta Kobashi taking on Toshiaki Kawada and Akira Taue, formally known as the Holy Demon Army.

My good friends Tomas and Fro joined us to talk about what makes this match such a masterpiece as well as what makes the Four Pillars of Heaven such an unbelievable quartet of talent.

Black Wednesday (again): WWE Releases More Wrestlers

On Wednesday, June 2nd, WWE released the following wrestlers:

  • Braun Strowman
  • Aleister Black
  • Ruby Riott
  • Lana
  • Santana Garrett
  • Buddy Murphy

People dubbed the releases "Black Wednesday", which, unfortunately, is probably the third or fourth Black Wednesday since the pandemic. We scratch our heads at the puzzling releases of Strowman and Black, discuss WWE potentially selling to another company, and figure out which promotions will sign these talents.

Also, please put the belt on Shingo. PLEASE.

WWE Commentary Turnver, NJPW’s COVID Struggles, Vacant IWGP Title

WWE Commentary Stability Held in Abeyance

WWE commentary turnover has been somewhat alarming. Well, maybe alarming isn't the best word but it's definitely not a good thing. The number of changes and new faces to the booth, other than Michael Cole, and to a lesser extent Corey Graves, may fill those interested in that position with a bit of apprehension. Adnan Virk and WWE parted ways last week after just two months. Jimmy Smith, a former Bellator MMA and UFC color commentator, will be filling the void left by Virk's departure. An incredibly strange move as RAW's commentary team will be a three-man booth filled with people best suited as color commentators. We brainstormed a few ways WWE can get better at commentary and we even suggested an off-the-wall pairing to take over on RAW.

NJPW'S COVID Struggles

NJPW has been struggling with their talent testing positive for COVID over the last few weeks. That, along with rumored unrest among gaijin talent, and Will Ospreay vacating the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, NJPW is in a tumultuous state right now. We discussed who we think should win the vacant championship, even though we all know that Okada is going to get the belt back AGAIN.

Max Minicast: John Cena puts over Taiwan and gets heat with China; Fast and Furious Deep Dive

John Cena, star of the upcoming Fast 9, got nuclear heat with China for calling Taiwan a country (it is a country). He apologized, in Mandarin, for his previous statement and proceeded to get heat with people around the world. I haven't seen him hold such a massive L since he got squashed by Brock at SummerSlam.

Personally, I feel for the guy because he would be screwed no matter what he did after his initial statement regarding Taiwan as a country (again, it very much is a country). China is a huge market for movies and releasing Fast 9 in a country where one of its stars has massive political heat would end in box office disaster. This has even had ramifications in WWE, as the company is rumored to have plans of Cena facing Roman Reigns at the SummerSlam main event in Las Vegas.

We're sorry, John. We still love you. We love you as much as we love the Fast & Furious franchise. A franchise, much like John Cena, that has proven staying power and has evolved into a weird version of the thing we originally liked.

AEW Double or Nothing 2021

In this episode of TAWF, we are joined once again by Japanese wrestling connoisseur and Hangman Page hater Fro. We discussed AEW Double or Nothing, Damon loses his patience entirely with the Young Bucks, Cody's off-putting character, and Paul Wight getting a Davey Richards-esque character overhaul.

AEW Double or Nothing Match Card

The show starts at 8 PM Eastern (the one true timezone). Here's your card:

  1. AEW Championship: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Pac vs. Orange Cassidy
  2. Stadium Stampede match: The Burnett's Boys vs. The Inter Circle
  3. AEW Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (c) vs. The Bodega Bombers of Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston
  4. TNT Championship: Miro vs. Lance Archer
  5. Cody "Do you know who my dad is?" Rhodes vs. Anthony Ogogo
  6. Darby Allin and his dad Sting vs. Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page
  7. Hangman vs Machine: Adam Page vs. Brian Cage
  8. Casino Battle Royale for a shot at the AEW Championship. Match features Christian Cage, Matt Sydal, Private Party, The Varsity Blondes, Penta El Zero M, and a mystery entrant (probably Paul Wight in an MMA gimmick)
